Many customers have SMTP overrides set, and while we are limited with some actions, it would be beneficial to the customer if we could provide error messages in the portal if there's an issue during the setup. Along with after a certain number of email failures, to send an email to the administrators in the account alerting them to X number of failures, so they can investigate (or reach out to our support team to help them investigate).
